Reflective Quality
[ Limited Editions of 12 ]
Mirrors have long been objects of human fascination. Offering reflective perspectives we may recall the story of Greek mythology of Narcissus + Echo.
Perspective? Vanity? Truth? When looking through a lens that casts reflection we are confronted with the changing reality of who we are and what mental constructs happen to be fluctuating in our minds. What if a mirror (rather than ourselves) offers its own biased perspective? In the story of Snow White, the evil vain queen asks her mirror for confirmation of her beauty and it's response draws epic consequences. In Jean Cocteau's "Orpheus" we are taken on a journey through the netherworld which is entered through the portal of mirror and reflection.
Written messages on these mirrors purposely appear in reverse as if the work is asking questions of the viewer. Immediate personal prompts take pause when the artwork disables a true reflection by offering back a blurred vision of self. The messaging contained in each piece is varied in subject but all question personal biases that we all take for granted and sometimes lurk beneath the surface of who we might think we really are.
