Reflective Quality
[ Limited Editions of 3 ]
The Reflective Quality series disrupts the viewer’s sense of self, offering fragmented and reversed reflections that challenge notions of identity, perception, and truth. Through the use of frosted glass, mirrors, and vinyl text, the works create a dialogue between the viewer and their own image, questioning the biases and constructs that shape our understanding of reality.
Drawing on mythological and literary references - from Narcissus and Echo to Snow White and Jean Cocteau’s Orpheus - the series interrogates the ways in which we construct and deconstruct our self-image. The mirrored surfaces become portals to introspection, revealing the blurred boundaries between truth and illusion. Written messages, appearing in reverse, prompt immediate personal reflection, while the frosted glass disables a true reflection, forcing viewers to confront the biases they often take for granted.
Produced using archival materials and best practices, each piece in the Reflective Quality series is a testament to the enduring power of art to provoke thought and inspire transformation. The series not only recontextualizes the mirror as a symbol of vanity and truth but also expands its relevance, offering a meditation on the complexities of identity and perception in an increasingly fragmented world.
The Reflective Quality series aligns with contemporary discourses on the intersection of art and psychology, using scientific and mythological methodologies to explore human experience.
What do these reflections reveal about the ways we see, and fail to see, ourselves? This series invites viewers to confront these questions, challenging them to reflect on the constructs that influence their perceptions. By transforming mirrors into works of art, Inouye recontextualizes their meaning and expands their relevance, allowing viewers to rethink the complexities of identity and the inevitability of change.
